Overview:
There is a great deal of confusion as to who all these new Optical Network start ups are and where they fit into the overall picture of Optical Networks. "Riding the Lightwave" is intended to sort and categorize the new and existing suppliers. This report analyzes the products of each company and breaks them down into the following nine categories.
- Long Haul DWDM
- Metro DWDM
- Access Networks Equipment
- Video Access Equipment
- Wavelength Routers & Gigabit Switches
- Terabit Routers & Optical Switches
- Aggregation Devices
- Enterprise Access Systems
- Residential Access Systems
Market forecasts are presented for each of these areas.
US Market Projections
Riding the Lightwave, projects an optical networking market of over $38B by 2004 but is it enough? The report makes a strong argument that the network in 2004 will have to be at least 15 times bigger (from top to bottom) than it is now. Will even the investment suggested by the above chart be enough to avoid serious bandwidth shortages?
Riding the Lightwave is a new report that not only reviews nearly 100 vendors of fiber optic transmission and switching equipment, but it also develops a carefully reasoned structure for the overall optical network (from various classes of access to the largest of backbone systems). It uses this structure to develop application information for each of the nine levels of equipment, as well as a basis for market projections. Riding the Lightwave is available through Information Gatekeepers at www.igigroup.com.
The report contains extensive Applications Notes on each of the network segments. These notes cover issues associated with the application of the particular segment. For example these notes include traffic models, interconnection schemes, standards information, technology descriptions and options, application approaches and limitations, and a description of current issues with the various technologies.
As a part of the market driver development, Riding the Lightwave presents a detailed parsing of projections for the growth of the Internet. This work comes to the startling conclusion that the Network in 2004 will be at least 15 times larger than todays network.
Riding the Lightwave Equipment Rationale
This Report uses the above illustrated organization as a fundamental rationale for the existing and evolving network. On this basis, the report discusses the application issues for each of the areas and the sub-areas. It also develops market projections for each sector, and provides extensive discussion of the suppliers (with product line descriptions, many individual product application drawings and contact information), as well as information on the fundamental, overall network issues.
